KINGFISHER POOL CLOSURE
The swimming pool at Kingfisher Leisure Centre is closed
(Updated 24th September)
The swimming pool at Kingfisher Leisure Centre in Sudbury has been closed to ensure public safety after surveys showed the pool requires a complete rebuild.
Building owners Babergh District Council had hoped ongoing repairs and maintenance would extend the pool’s expected lifespan, but this is no longer viable.
Kingfisher’s pool is now approaching 40 years old – Swim England, the national governing body for swimming in England, says the average life of a pool is 38 years.
The swimming pool, sauna and jacuzzi must close with immediate effect. (17.9.26)
PLEASE NOTE: All other Kingfisher facilities, including the gym, studios, soft play and cafe, will remain open.

FAQs
About the pool closure
Why has the pool closed?
- The decision to close the pool has been taken by Babergh District Council following a new survey report, which outlined its deteriorating condition and which could not guarantee people’s safety moving forward
- The council has continued to invest in repairs and maintenance in recent years, and earmarked £875K this year, but the cost of a pool rebuild is far beyond this
Kingfisher’s pool is approaching 40 years old, beyond the average lifespan typically associated with swimming pool facilities. - You can see the full press release here.
Are the gym and fitness classes still open?
Yes.
Our gym and fitness classes (non-water-based) will continue to operate as normal.
When will the pool reopen?
Babergh District Council has started exploring future options for modern swimming facilities in the Sudbury area. But the cost of providing new swimming pools is significant.
How they are funded must be looked at on a national level.
Therefore, we do not currently have a reopening date. We will keep members updated as soon as we have more information.
Was there anything else that could’ve been done to avoid the pool closing?
There has been significant investment in repairs and maintenance of the pool, with a further £875k earmarked this year. Kingfisher’s pool is now approaching 40 years old – Swim England, the national governing body for swimming in England, says the average life of a pool is 38 years. Building owners Babergh District Council had hoped ongoing repairs and maintenance would extend the pool’s expected lifespan, but this is no longer viable.
Is this related to the issues with the roof which happened two years ago?
No, that is a separate issue and has no bearing on the decision to close the pool. A temporary solution had been found for the atrium roof and longer-term solutions explored.
Was it safe to swim in the pool before it closed?
Why hasn’t alternative swimming provision been planned in Sudbury?
Babergh had already started to explore longer-term options for swimming facilities in Sudbury, and this work will continue. But the cost of building new pools is significant. How they are funded must be looked at on a national level.
In the meantime, swimming is available at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure, and Babergh is urgently looking for alternative swimming provision closer to Sudbury.
What will happen to the pool space now?
The pool will need to be decommissioned, and we will look at possible future options for use of that space.
